Jodhpur: Beyond the Blues, A Tapestry of Heritage and Culture

Jodhpur: Beyond the Blues, A Tapestry of Heritage and Culture

Contrary to the popular notion, Jodhpur is not a city blanketed entirely in blue hues. But it is a captivating destination that goes far beyond its famous azure facades. While there is indeed a mesmerising blue neighbourhood and a scattering of blue homes, the city unfolds as a kaleidoscope of colors, traditions, and architectural marvels. In this blog, I suggest my reasons why a visit to Jodhpur should be on your itinerary.

Jodhpur - The a little bit blue city.

Beyond the Blues: The Majestic Mehrangarh Fort

While the blue neighbourhood is undeniably enchanting, Jodhpur boasts a crown jewel that rises above the skyline—the majestic Mehrangarh Fort. Be sure to get up early and be the first to enter as it gets very busy here around mid-morning and luch time.

Perched atop a rocky hill, the fort is an imposing structure that narrates tales of valour and grandeur. As you ascend the fort's cobbled paths, panoramic views of the city unfold, revealing a symphony of colours, from the blue neighbourhood to the vibrant markets and bustling streets below. Explore the intricacies of the fort's architecture, delve into its rich history, and feel the echoes of the past in every stone and courtyard.

Mehrangarh Fort stands as an architectural marvel and a testament to Rajasthan's rich history. Built in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, the fort served as a strategic military stronghold, safeguarding the Marwar region from external invasions. Its name, Mehrangarh, translates to the "Fort of the Sun," reflecting the fort's position as the sun's first rays illuminate its towering walls.

Over the centuries, Mehrangarh Fort underwent expansions by subsequent rulers, each contributing to its grandeur. The fort's formidable walls, standing 400 feet above the city, are adorned with intricate carvings and expansive courtyards that tell tales of Rajput valor and regality. The fort remained unconquered throughout its history, a testament to its strategic location and formidable defences.

Today, Mehrangarh Fort stands not only as a historical relic but also as a museum showcasing a vast collection of artefacts, weapons, and intricate palanquins. Visitors are transported back in time as they explore the fort's palatial rooms, opulent courtyards, and panoramic views of the "Blue City" below, offering a captivating journey through the centuries of Marwar's storied past.

Quirky Cafes and Culinary Delights

Jodhpur's charm extends beyond its historical monuments, embracing a contemporary vibe in its quirky cafes and culinary landscape. Escape the bustling streets and find solace in the city's eclectic cafes, where creativity meets cuisine. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon in a rooftop café, savoring the flavors of Rajasthan while overlooking the sprawling cityscape. From traditional Rajasthani thalis to global cuisines with a local twist, Jodhpur's culinary scene is a delight for the gastronome in you.

Our favourite is definitely Sam's Art Cafe. They have a great range of both Indian and European meals, but the highlight is the sweets menu and icy-cold milkshakes!

Descend the steps into the cool depths of these wells, and feel the connection between water, architecture, and community in a contemplative silence.

Jodhpur: Beyond the Blues, An Enchanting Tapestry of Heritage and Culture

In essence, Jodhpur is a city that transcends preconceived notions. While its blue neighbourhood is undeniably alluring, the city's true beauty lies in its multifaceted character—a harmonious blend of history, culture, and contemporary vibrancy. As you explore the streets, forts, and hidden corners of Jodhpur, you'll find yourself immersed in a narrative that goes beyond the blues, revealing a city that is as diverse as it is enchanting. A visit to Jodhpur is not just a journey; it's an odyssey through time, colours, and the enduring spirit of Rajasthan.

How to get there How to get there
There are daily flights from Delhi to Jodhpur. Trains run regularly from most major cities to Jodhpur every day for a fraction of the cost of an airline ticket. Just bear in mind that while the train journey is exciting and quite scenic, it will take considerably longer. It's up to you to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages and how it fits your itinerary.

The airport is small and easy to navigate. Once outside it is the usual chaotic hustle and bustle with taxis and drivers chasing your business. I suggest you take the short, two minute walk to the gates of the airport and get an Uber. It will cost about $7.00 AUD (380 INR) for an Uber from the airport to the city centre, or in our case Clock Tower Road.
Best time of year Best time of year
This trip saw us in India in November which, by the calender, is the last month of Autumn. However, Jodhpur was still very warm (hot in the midday sun) and we got by most of the time in merino t-shirts and shorts, or long pants with a shawl / scarf as appropriate for local customs.

We usually visit India in February and March, which is spring. This is a very pleasant time of the year to visit with cool, crisp mornings and comfortable daytime temperatures.
Weather Weather
Hot and dry. Also very dusty. Very little wind which means the smog hangs in the air.
What to pack What to pack
Pack light. You will get by with three t-shirts (wash one, wear one, spare one) and two pairs of pants, one of them long to the ankles. Please respect local customs and pack a shawl or scarf cover your head and shoulders when visting monuments and places of worship. (Or do as we do every trip and buy two or three more). Good walking shoes are a must. You could get by with a pair of quality trekking sandals, just make sure the soles are thick and sturdy to protect your feet from sharp things. Jodhpur is the perfect walking city, so look after your feet.
Currency Admission Fee
Just like the rest of the country the currency is the Indian Rupee (INR or IR). Cash is king here. You will get better deals on everything by paying with cash. Yes, your Visa and Mastercard will work at hotels and larger stores, but be prepared to pay in cash. Everything is cheap (comparatively) and everything is negotiable.
Fitness level Fitness level
An average level of fitness will get you by in Jodhpur. Just be aware that the roads and paths are uneven / broken / in a state of disrepair. Always look were you are going. We chose to walk (up the hill) from our hotel to Mehrangarh Fort. It took about 25 minutes, which is probably 25 minutes faster than finding a tuk-tuk and battling the traffic. It was hot but not taxing, and quite an enjoyable walk. Walking the city is easy as it's mostly flat, with gentle, undulating hills.
What to eat What to eat
Jodhpur isn't known for it's 'street eats' like Jaipur, Varanasi and Amritsar. I suggest booking a hotel that offers breakfast and eat dinner back at your hotel too. We got by with breakfast at our hotel, snacks and fruit from street vendors through the day and a nice relaxing dinner back at the hotel.

As in all of India, reduce your risk of getting sick by avoiding meat products. Go vegetarian for a few weeks....the food is that good you won't even miss meat!
Shopping Shopping
Surprisingly, there is good shopping here with lots of quirky, original art and crafts. There are also a few very good leather workers. We bought quite a few things from Iron Era and two really good, hand-made camel skin shoulder bags that will be handy for years of travel.
Hot tips Hot tips
If you stay in the Clock Tower Road (Ghanta Ghar) area of Jodhpur I highly recommend that you walk to the Mehrangarh Fort. It's faster than finding a ride and battling the traffic and gives you a great perspective over the city.
